Nancy Pelosi and President Obama have asserted that one of the reasons health care costs are out of control is a lack of preventative care and screening. They say that under their plan, additional screening will result in lowered costs. Unfortunately, according to the CBO, that is simply not true. Recent studies from the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society found that preventative screening does improve patient health, but also increases costs. As it turns out, it costs more to screen 100 people in order to find the one you are looking for than to simply wait for the one to present symptoms. I'm not advocating reducing screening for common ailments, but I'm pretty sure that when Washington finally figures out the wrong-headedness of their position, they will.
